Common Questions

What is APA in yacht chartering?
APA stands for Advanced Provisioning Allowance. It's typically 30% of the charter fee paid upfront to cover fuel, food, marina fees, and tips during the charter. Any unused portion is refunded after the trip.
What does 'on the hard' mean?
'On the hard' means the boat has been hauled out of the water and is sitting on land, usually in a boatyard, for maintenance, repairs, or storage. It's one of the most common terms you'll hear at any marina.
What is a seacock on a boat?
A seacock is a valve installed on the hull below the waterline that controls the flow of water into or out of the boat. They're used for engine cooling, air conditioning raw water intake, and through-hull fittings. Regular inspection is critical — a failed seacock can sink a boat.
What does 'three sheets to the wind' mean?
It means very drunk. The 'sheets' are actually the ropes (lines) that control the sails. If three sheets are loose, the sails flap wildly and the boat staggers — just like a drunk person. Still the most shared nautical idiom on social media in 2026.
What is marine AC descaling?
Descaling (also called flushing) is the process of removing mineral buildup (calcium, salt deposits) from a marine air conditioning system's heat exchanger and water lines. In warm saltwater areas like Southwest Florida, this should be done annually to prevent cooling loss and compressor failure.
