What We Audit

Every system that carries current on your vessel gets inspected against ABYC standards. Here's what we review:

Battery Banks

Load testing, capacity verification, connection integrity, terminal corrosion, bank configuration (series/parallel), and remaining service life assessment for AGM, flooded, and lithium batteries.

Inverter / Charger

Operation verification, charge profile settings, output testing, transfer switch function, and compatibility check with your battery chemistry. Common misconfiguration issues identified.

DC Distribution & Panels

Panel labeling, circuit protection (fuses/breakers), wire gauge verification, voltage drop testing, and load balancing. Identifies overloaded circuits and missing protection.

Shore Power & AC Systems

Shore power inlet condition, cord and connector inspection, GFCI/ELCI protection, isolation transformer check, reverse polarity testing, and AC panel review.

Bonding & Grounding

Bonding system continuity, zinc anode condition, stray current testing, galvanic isolator verification, and through-hull bonding. Critical for corrosion prevention in salt water.

Solar & Charging Sources

Solar panel output testing, charge controller configuration, alternator charging verification, and multi-source charging coordination. Ensures all sources work together properly.

Electrical Audit FAQ

What does a marine electrical audit include?
Our electrical audit is a comprehensive on-board review of your vessel's entire electrical system. We inspect battery banks (condition, capacity, connections), inverter/charger operation, DC distribution panels, fusing and circuit protection, shore power connections, AC systems, bonding and grounding, and corrosion protection. You receive a detailed written report with findings, photos, and prioritized recommendations.
How much does a marine electrical audit cost?
Our standard electrical audit is $160/hour with a typical audit taking 2-3 hours depending on vessel size and system complexity. For vessels over 50 feet or with extensive electrical systems, expect 3-4 hours. Emergency or expedited audits are available at $220/hour plus travel. Call 239-323-9600 for a specific quote.
How often should I have my boat's electrical system audited?
We recommend a full electrical audit every 2-3 years for vessels in regular use, or annually for liveaboards and charter vessels. You should also schedule an audit after any major electrical work, after a lightning strike, before a long passage, or when purchasing a used vessel. Southwest Florida's salt air and humidity accelerate corrosion, making regular audits especially important.
What problems do you typically find during an electrical audit?
Common findings include undersized wiring, missing or incorrect fusing, corroded connections, improper bonding, overloaded circuits, battery banks past their service life, charger/inverter misconfiguration, and ABYC code violations. Many of these are fire or shock hazards that boat owners don't notice until something fails. Early detection through an audit prevents costly emergency repairs.
Do you check lithium battery systems during an audit?
Yes. We audit both traditional lead-acid/AGM and lithium (LiFePO4) battery systems. For lithium systems, we verify BMS configuration, charge profiles, disconnect settings, and compatibility with your existing charging sources (alternator, solar, shore charger). Lithium conversions done incorrectly are one of the most common issues we find.
Can you audit my solar panel installation?
Absolutely. Solar system audits cover panel condition and mounting, charge controller configuration, wiring gauge and routing, fusing, and integration with your battery bank. We verify that your solar system is producing what it should and that the installation meets ABYC standards. Many DIY solar installations have wiring or fusing issues that reduce performance or create safety hazards.
