Common Marine Generator Problems

Southwest Florida's heat, humidity, and warm seawater are hard on generators. Here's what we see most often.

Won't Start

Fuel delivery issues, dead start battery, clogged filters, failed fuel solenoid, or control board failure. We diagnose on-board.

Overheating

Failed raw water impeller (#1 cause), clogged strainer, collapsed hose, corroded heat exchanger, or failed thermostat.

Low Output / Surging

Governor issues, fuel starvation, injector problems, or AVR (voltage regulator) failure. Load bank test reveals the cause.

Excessive Noise / Vibration

Worn mounts, exhaust leaks, loose panels, internal engine wear. We isolate the source and fix it.

Generator Services

From routine annual service to emergency repair and complete installations.

Repair & Diagnostics

On-board troubleshooting of all generator systems: fuel, electrical, cooling, exhaust, and control. Most common repairs completed same-day.

Annual Service

Oil change, fuel filters, raw water impeller, belt inspection, coolant check, battery test, load bank test, and full operational verification.

Installation & Repowering

New generator installations and repower of aging units. Proper sizing, mounting, exhaust, cooling, fuel supply, and electrical integration.

Load Bank Testing

Verify your generator can handle its rated load. Identifies weak cylinders, fuel delivery problems, and governor issues before they strand you.

Sound Dampening

Reduce generator noise with proper enclosure design, exhaust upgrades, vibration isolation mounts, and sound insulation materials.

Emergency Service

Generator down at the dock or on the water? 24/7 emergency response. $220/hr. We carry common parts and impellers on our truck.

Frequently Asked Questions

What marine generator brands do you service?

We service all major marine generator brands including Onan/Cummins, Kohler, Westerbeke, Northern Lights, Fischer Panda, Polar Power, and Mastervolt. Whether diesel or gasoline, we have the training and parts access to keep your genset running.

How much does marine generator service cost?

Standard generator service is $160/hour. A routine annual service (oil change, filters, impeller, belt inspection, load test) typically takes 2-3 hours. Major repairs and overhauls are quoted per job. Emergency service is $220/hour plus travel.

How often should my marine generator be serviced?

Follow the manufacturer's schedule — typically every 100-250 hours or annually, whichever comes first. In Southwest Florida's heat and humidity, we recommend the shorter interval. Key service items: oil and filter change, fuel filter replacement, raw water impeller, belt inspection, coolant check, and load bank test.

My generator won't start. What should I check?

Before calling us, check: fuel supply and shutoff valve, battery charge and connections, seawater intake (strainer clogged?), oil level (low oil safety shutoff), and the breaker/switch panel. If those are all good and it still won't start, it's likely a fuel delivery, ignition, or control board issue — call us at 239-323-9600.

Can you install a new generator on my boat?

Yes. We handle complete generator installations including engine bed fabrication, exhaust system routing, fuel supply plumbing, raw water cooling, electrical integration with your AC panel, sound dampening, and ventilation. We size the generator to your actual load requirements — not guesswork.

What causes generator overheating on boats?

The #1 cause in Southwest Florida is a failed raw water impeller — the rubber vanes deteriorate in warm water and clog the heat exchanger. Other common causes: blocked seawater strainer, collapsed raw water hose, corroded heat exchanger tubes, failed thermostat, and restricted exhaust. We carry impellers and common parts on our service truck.

Keep Your Generator Running

A dead generator means no AC, no refrigeration, and no power. Don't wait for a failure — schedule your annual service today.
