Diagnostics & Repair

Common Marine Watermaker Problems We Fix

Every watermaker issue has a root cause. We diagnose with pressure gauges, TDS meters, and flow measurements — no guesswork, no unnecessary parts.

Low Water Production

Fouled membrane, worn pre-filters, or low feed pressure. The #1 performance complaint we diagnose.

High-Pressure Pump Failure

Cavitation from worn impeller, oil starvation, or seized plunger. Expensive if ignored — preventable with service.

Bad Taste or Odor

Biological fouling from missed flushes, contaminated membrane, or running in polluted water.

High TDS in Product Water

Membrane degradation, O-ring bypass, or operating at incorrect pressure. TDS above 500 ppm means action needed.

Rapid Filter Clogging

Running in silty water, algae blooms, or wrong filter micron rating. Common in SWFL's warm Gulf waters.

System Won't Start

Electrical fault, low-pressure safety switch tripped, or control board failure. Often a simple fix.

Our Watermaker Services

Complete Marine Watermaker Service

From emergency repairs to new installations — we handle every aspect of marine reverse osmosis desalination.

Watermaker Repair & Diagnostics

Systematic troubleshooting with pressure gauges, TDS meters, and flow measurements. We identify the root cause before recommending repairs.

  • High-pressure pump rebuild & replacement
  • RO membrane testing & replacement
  • Control board & sensor diagnostics
  • Boost pump & impeller service
  • High-pressure hose & fitting repair
  • Electrical troubleshooting & wiring

Starting at $175/hr plus parts

Maintenance, Flushing & CIP

Southwest Florida's warm Gulf waters accelerate biological growth and mineral scaling. Regular maintenance is the difference between a 3-year and a 10-year membrane life.

  • Fresh water flush system verification
  • Pre-filter replacement (20μ & 5μ)
  • Carbon flush filter replacement
  • Alkaline & acid CIP membrane cleaning
  • Pump oil change & impeller inspection
  • TDS testing & production rate verification

New Watermaker Installation

Complete system design and installation. We size your watermaker based on crew size, cruising plans, and available power — then install it right the first time.

  • System sizing (6 GPH to 40+ GPH)
  • Raw water intake & pre-filtration plumbing
  • High-pressure pump & membrane mounting
  • Product water plumbing to tanks
  • Brine discharge routing
  • Commissioning & water quality verification

Pickling & Long-Term Storage

Leaving your boat for more than a week? Your watermaker must be properly pickled to prevent biological fouling that destroys membranes. We use the correct chemicals for each brand.

  • SMBS pickling for standard piston pumps
  • Spectra SC-1 for energy-recovery systems
  • Schenker-specific storage chemicals
  • Propylene glycol winterizing (cold climates)
  • De-pickling & recommissioning
  • Seasonal storage programs available

Frequently Asked Questions

Marine Watermaker Service FAQ

How much does marine watermaker service cost in Fort Myers?

Basic watermaker service (filter replacement, flush system check, pressure test) starts at $175/hour plus parts. A full annual service including oil change, impeller inspection, and membrane performance test typically runs $400–$800 depending on the system. Emergency watermaker repair is $220/hour. Call 239-323-9600 for a free phone consultation.

How often should I flush my marine watermaker in Southwest Florida?

In Florida's warm waters, flush your watermaker with fresh water after every use or at minimum every 5 days. The warm Gulf temperatures accelerate biological growth inside idle systems. Always use a carbon filter when flushing with marina tap water to remove chlorine — Florida municipal water is heavily chlorinated and will destroy your RO membrane without carbon filtration.

Can I use the same pickling solution for all watermaker brands?

No. Standard piston-pump systems (Cat, General, Danfoss) use Sodium Metabisulfite (SMBS), but energy-recovery watermakers like Spectra and Schenker require manufacturer-specific chemicals (e.g., Spectra SC-1). Using SMBS in an energy-recovery system will permanently damage the pump internals. We know which chemicals work with each brand.

How do I know when my RO membrane needs replacing?

Replace the membrane when product water TDS exceeds 500 ppm even after a proper CIP cleaning, or when production volume drops more than 15% from baseline despite clean pre-filters and correct operating pressure. A quality membrane lasts 5–10 years with proper maintenance. We test membrane performance as part of every service visit.

What watermaker brands do you service in Southwest Florida?

We service all major marine watermaker brands: Spectra Watermakers (Ventura, Newport, Catalina), Schenker (Zen, Smart series), Sea Recovery, Village Marine Tec, Rainman (portable and semi-portable), Parker/HRO Sea Exchange (hydraulic-driven), and custom installations. Our technicians have hands-on experience with both energy-recovery and traditional high-pressure systems.

My watermaker water tastes bad — what's wrong?

Bad-tasting product water usually means: (1) Biological fouling on the membrane from inadequate flushing — the 'rotten egg' sulfur smell. (2) Worn-out membrane allowing salt passage — check TDS levels. (3) Contaminated pre-filters or carbon filter. (4) Running the watermaker in polluted or silty water. A diagnostic service identifies the exact cause and whether you need a CIP cleaning or membrane replacement.

Do you install new watermaker systems on boats?

Yes. We design and install complete watermaker systems — from compact 6 GPH units for coastal cruisers to 40+ GPH systems for offshore yachts. Installation includes raw water intake plumbing, pre-filtration, high-pressure pump mounting, membrane housing, product water plumbing to tanks, brine discharge, electrical connections, and commissioning with water quality verification.

What areas do you serve for marine watermaker service?

We provide mobile marine watermaker service throughout Southwest Florida: Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Naples, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Estero, Sanibel, Pine Island, Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, and Sarasota. We come to your dock, marina, or boatyard. Core service area is Lee and Collier County with no travel surcharge.
