Why Marine Refrigeration Is Different From Your Kitchen

A household refrigerator sits in a climate-controlled room, level, with unlimited power. Your boat's refrigeration system operates in a completely different world — ambient temperatures above 90°F in the engine room, constant vibration from running gear, salt air corroding connections, and limited 12/24V DC power from your battery bank. That's why marine refrigeration requires specialized knowledge that a standard HVAC tech simply doesn't have.

Common Marine Refrigeration Problems We See Every Week

1. Compressor Running But Box Won't Cool

This is the #1 call we get. The compressor sounds like it's working, but the fridge or freezer stays warm. Common causes:

  • Low refrigerant charge — micro-leaks at flare fittings or evaporator connections are extremely common in the marine environment due to vibration
  • Dirty condenser — raw water-cooled condensers foul with marine growth; air-cooled units get clogged with dust and salt
  • Failed cold plate eutectic — the solution inside the cold plate has lost its thermal mass (common on 10+ year old systems)
  • Thermostat or control board failure — corrosion on PCB boards from humidity

2. Compressor Short-Cycling (Starts and Stops Repeatedly)

Short-cycling destroys compressors. If yours is clicking on and off every few minutes:

  • Overcharge or undercharge of refrigerant — both cause high head pressure and thermal overload trips
  • Restricted condenser flow — barnacles in raw water condenser tubes
  • Voltage drop — undersized wire runs from battery bank to compressor, especially on boats with long cable runs
  • Failed start relay or capacitor — common on Danfoss/Secop BD35/BD50 compressors

3. Ice Buildup on Evaporator / Cold Plate

Excessive frost means the defrost cycle isn't working or the box seal is compromised. On boats, the most common culprit is a warped or deteriorated gasket allowing humid marina air into the box. We also see drain tubes clogged with debris routing condensate back into the insulation.

4. Water Leaking Into the Bilge From Refrigeration

Usually a failed raw water condenser hose, corroded through-hull fitting, or cracked condenser heat exchanger. This needs immediate attention — salt water and refrigerant don't mix, and a flooded condenser will kill the compressor.

Systems We Service

Cold Plate / Holding Plate Systems

Cold plates store thermal energy in a eutectic solution, allowing the compressor to run for a set period (usually while the generator is on) and then coast on stored cold for hours. This is the gold standard for cruising boats and commercial fishing vessels. We service and rebuild cold plate systems from Seafrost, Frigoboat, Glacier Bay, and Grunert.

Direct-Cool (Evaporator Plate) Systems

The most common system on production boats — a flat evaporator plate inside the box connected to a 12V compressor. Brands we work on daily: Vitrifrigo, Isotherm, Dometic, Norcold, and Engel. We stock Danfoss/Secop BD35 and BD50 compressors and electronic modules for same-day repairs.

Keel-Cooled Systems

These use the hull below the waterline as a condenser — no raw water pump, no through-hull, no maintenance on the cooling side. Ideal for bluewater cruisers. We install and service Frigoboat keel cooler systems and can retrofit existing air-cooled units to keel cooling.

Custom Deep-Freeze & Fish Box Systems

Sportfish and commercial boats need serious cold — we're talking -10°F to -20°F for tuna-grade freezing. We design and install custom deep-freeze systems with proper insulation (4"+ closed-cell foam), oversized cold plates, and high-capacity compressors. If your fish box can't hold temp on a 3-day offshore trip, call us.

Eskimo Ice Makers

Marine ice makers are notorious for problems — scale buildup from raw water, failed harvest cycles, and control board failures. We service Eskimo Ice and other marine ice maker brands. Regular descaling is critical in Southwest Florida's warm, mineral-rich water.

  1. Dock-side diagnosis — We come to your boat with gauges, leak detector, and multimeter. No need to haul out.
  2. Pressure and temperature check — We verify suction/discharge pressures and compare to manufacturer specs for your system.
  3. Electrical verification — Voltage at compressor, amp draw, relay/module function, wire gauge adequacy.
  4. Repair or quote — Many repairs are same-day. For parts we don't stock, we typically have them within 48 hours.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should my marine fridge take to cool down?

A properly functioning system should pull a pre-cooled box from 75°F to 38°F within 2-4 hours. If it's taking 8+ hours or never reaching temp, something is wrong — low charge, dirty condenser, or inadequate insulation.

Can I convert my ice box to refrigeration?

Yes — this is one of our most popular jobs. We install a cold plate or evaporator plate, compressor, and thermostat into your existing ice box. The key is adequate insulation (minimum 3" closed-cell foam on all sides) and proper ventilation for the compressor.

Why does my boat fridge work at the dock but not at anchor?

At the dock you have shore power keeping batteries at 14V+. At anchor, battery voltage drops to 12.2-12.4V under load. If your wire run to the compressor is undersized, voltage drop kills performance. We see this constantly — the fix is usually upgrading wire gauge or relocating the compressor closer to the battery bank.

How often should marine refrigeration be serviced?

Annual inspection minimum. We check refrigerant charge, condenser condition, electrical connections, compressor amp draw, and thermostat calibration. In Southwest Florida's heat, your system works harder than boats up north — don't skip it.

Do you service absorption (propane/electric) fridges?

Yes — Dometic RM series and similar. These have no compressor but use a heating element and ammonia circuit. Common issues are failed heating elements, blocked flue, and leveling problems. We can also convert you to a more efficient compressor-based system if you're tired of absorption limitations.
